Sex Trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purposes of a commercial sex act, in which the commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 18 years of age (22 USC § 7102).

The US Department of Justice estimates that approximately 100,000 US children are at risk for entry into domestic minor sex trafficking every year. From 2014-2018 the MD Human Trafficking Task Force Victim Services Sub-Committee served 300 child victims of sex trafficking in MD.

Identification and Response: Identifying victims and responding appropriately are the two greatest challenges when assisting trafficking victims. Victims have experienced overwhelming abuse and trauma, which prevent them from self-identifying as victims and from trusting human service or government personnel and services.
